Safety
On the road safety is not just about trucks, it's about people - their behavior
and choices, and how they interact with a dynamic world. DLI's goal is to maintain
the safest fleet possible for our customers, our community, and our drivers.
Driver Screening
The first step to having a safe fleet is to hire the safest drivers possible. DLI
is an equal opportunity employer and we have a very rigorous screening program that
adheres to all DOT requirements and identifies the best qualified drivers. Our hiring
process involves a thorough review of an applicant’s driving record, work history,
and safety record through a multi–step interview process. DLI has a dedicated recruiting
department to ensure that only the best qualified drivers are hired.
Driver Training
DLI communicates safety standards and best business practices with drivers on a
regular basis. Drivers are informed of current issues, law changes, and current
company statistics. DLI also operates a Driving Simulator and we use on-line training
courses for continued driver development. The simulator allows us to pinpoint problem
areas for drivers and arrange for training that addresses those issues. Additionally,
we send out regular messages through the PeopleNet systems for the drivers to inform
them of miscellaneous news regarding their geographic area or related type of work.
Equipment Maintenance
Having reliable and safe equipment is just as important as having a safe driver.
DLI has a 24 hour Maintenance Department to sustain the demand required to ensure
appropriate maintenance is being performed on DLI equipment. Safety personnel regularly
check drivers to make sure they are performing their vehicle and equipment inspections.
The drivers are the eyes and ears of the Maintenance Department and DLI stresses
the imperativeness for drivers to check and call in all maintenance issues. Because
DLI's operations run both night and day the Maintenance Department will always have
a person on staff to field driver calls regarding equipment maintenance requests.
Our Maintenance staff also manages a proactive equipment maintenance schedule program.
This program requires that every piece of equipment is regularly checked and serviced.
Performance Tracking
DLI's Safety Department records an array of driver statistics beyond accidents,
injuries, and log violations. We look at additional risk behavior data that is supplied
by the PeopleNet systems. This data includes hard braking, speeding, gear shifting,
turning, and fuel consumption. This data reflects the quality of each driver's performance,
and is communicated to drivers and addressed by both supervisors and Safety personnel.
